Retaining wall construction in Wellington FL - a wall that holds your yard in place

Soil washing down your slope every heavy rain? We build a retaining wall planned around your lot and where its water goes.

A curved stone retaining wall borders a backyard patio with a fire bowl, seating, dining table, and flower beds.

What goes into building a retaining wall in Wellington?

Retaining wall construction in Wellington means building a wall that holds back soil, so a slope, a raised bed or a change in grade stays where it is instead of sliding onto your lawn, patio or driveway. A common type is the segmental wall, made of manufactured concrete blocks stacked without mortar, locked together with keys or connectors and held in place mostly by its own weight.

Most people call Quality Wellington Concrete and Masonry because they see soil washing down after a storm, a yard that drops off too steeply to use, or an old wall that's started to lean. Before we talk about block, I want you to understand what's pushing on that ground and where the water goes, because that decides what kind of wall your yard needs, if it needs one at all.

The price moves with how much wall face there is, what it's built from, how much digging and soil work the spot needs and how easy it is to get material into your yard. The schedule turns on whether the city wants a permit and extra drawings, how soon buried lines get marked and what the ground looks like once it's open. The estimate I write after walking your lot gives you your own figure and says what we'll do and why.

What happens after you call us about a retaining wall?

You call or send a message, and from there the same people stay with your wall from the first look to the last block, so you're never explaining your yard twice.

I walk your lot and write the estimate myself

I come out, look at the slope, answer your questions and write an estimate that says what we'll do and why. I started this business in Wellington in 2020, and once you say yes, our crew does the building.

We apply for any permit and set up inspections

When your wall calls for a permit, we apply for it and schedule the inspections, and I'll go over that part with you at the estimate. While the city reviews it and while our crew works, I'll keep you posted on what's next.

Licensed and insured, and fair to ask about

We're licensed and insured. In Florida a certified contractor license covers the whole state, while a registered one covers only the cities or counties where the contractor holds a certificate of competency, so it's fair to ask anyone you hire which kind they have.

How we handle retaining wall construction on your lot

We start by learning your lot, where the property lines and any easements run, which buried utilities cross it, how the ground slopes in front of the wall and behind it, and what will sit above it, like a driveway or a pool. Then we plan where surface water goes at the top of the wall and at its base before anything gets built, because one block maker's specification calls for keeping water from pooling or getting trapped in either spot, and a wall holding water behind it is working against itself.

Some yards need more than a new wall. If you've got an older brick or stone wall worth keeping, masonry restoration can bring it back without tearing it out, and if the new wall is part of a patio, we can plan fireplace installation alongside it.

  • Lot review covering property lines, easements, slopes and loads above the wall
  • Buried utilities located and marked before any digging
  • A surface water plan for the top and the base of the wall
  • Excavation, a packed base and block set course by course
  • Backfill, final grading and cleanup when the wall is done

From staked line to finished wall

Once the estimate is settled and any permit is in hand, the work runs in this order, and I'll tell you before each part starts.

  1. Stake the line and confirm the plan

We mark where the wall goes on the ground and walk it with you, so you can see how it sits against the lines, the house and the pool before a shovel goes in. It's a lot easier to move a string line than a finished wall.

  2. Dig out and check the soil

Our crew digs the trench and looks hard at what comes up, because Florida ground can surprise you. If the soil turns out poor, one wall maker's guidance is to bring in the owner and a soil engineer to talk about removing and replacing it, so I'll stop and sit down with you before we go further.

  3. Pack the base and build the wall

We pack a firm, level base, because every course above it follows the first one. Then the block goes up course by course, with backfill placed behind it as the wall climbs.

  4. Finish the drainage and clean up

We grade the top and the bottom so surface water follows the plan we made instead of sitting against the wall. Then we haul off the spoil, clean up and walk the finished wall with you.

Retaining wall questions from Wellington homeowners

What does a retaining wall cost near Wellington?

A retaining wall in the West Palm Beach area usually costs about $16 to $50 per square foot of wall face, the side you see. Where yours lands depends a lot on material, since boulders, stone, wood, concrete, interlocking block and railroad ties are all priced differently. I'll measure your wall on site and put your figure in writing. Satisfaction guaranteed on every job.

Who handles building permits for a retaining wall in Wellington?

Wellington's Building Division issues building permits and processes them electronically. If you want to check a local rule for your wall yourself, that's the office to ask.

Will my retaining wall in Wellington need an engineer?

It may, because where special conditions exist, the city's building official can require extra construction documents prepared by a registered design professional, such as an engineer. One wall installation guide advises checking the local code rules before a project of any size to see what engineering it needs, so that's the first thing I look at for your wall.

What happens before digging starts on a retaining wall?

Buried utility lines get marked through the 811 Call Before You Dig service, which marks them a few days ahead of digging. We build that wait into the schedule, and our crew keeps the dig clear of whatever gets marked.

Why water shapes wall design around Wellington

Wellington drains through the Acme Improvement District's storm water system of canals, detention lakes, catch basins and pump stations, and a lot of the ground across Florida doesn't drain well on its own. Statewide, most of the sandy soils called Spodosols are poorly drained, with the water table at or near the surface for much of the year, so rain on a sloped yard has fewer places to go, and that's why the water plan comes first on the walls we build.

We're based in Wellington and work in many cities around it, including West Palm Beach, Royal Palm Beach, The Acreage and beyond. Around here we're usually called about a raised bed beside a pool deck, a yard that steps down toward the back or an older wall that's started to lean, and the planning is the same wherever you live.
