Masonry Contractor in The Acreage, FL - Walls, Pavers and Repairs for Acre Lots

Quality Wellington Concrete and Masonry is a masonry contractor based in Wellington that builds and repairs block walls, driveway pavers, walkways, chimneys and foundations for homeowners on the one-acre-plus lots of The Acreage.

A light-colored paver driveway and walkway with curved borders extends alongside a blue-shingled house and landscaped garden.
A curved stone retaining wall borders a backyard patio with a fire bowl, seating, dining table, and flower beds.

The Acreage, as we see it on the job

Most of the homes we work on in The Acreage sit on an acre or more, in unincorporated Palm Beach County rather than inside a city, and a lot of the owners keep horses, grow things or just like the room. That room changes the job, because a privacy wall, a driveway or a walkway out here runs far longer than on a typical suburban lot, and the house is often a good walk from where a truck can park.

It's different work from what we do in Wellington or Royal Palm Beach, where houses sit closer together. Out here the ground is the first thing I look at, since where the water goes after a summer storm decides how we set a footing, slope a path or drain behind a wall.

What we build and fix on Acreage properties

Working in The Acreage: permits, licenses and what sets the price

Because The Acreage isn't a city, the county issues building permits here, and when a job needs one, the county's review and inspections set part of the schedule along with the weather. Before you hire anyone, it's worth checking two things, the contractor's trade license and the county business tax receipt, and I've covered both in the questions below. We're licensed and insured, and when your job calls for a permit we apply for it, set up the inspections and walk you through it at the estimate.

The roads are long and the lots are wide, so getting block and equipment to the back of the property is part of the plan from day one. The price moves with how much wall, drive or walkway there is, how deep we dig once we see the ground, how far we carry material from where a truck can park, and whether you pick block, brick, pavers or stone, and I'll give you your own figure after I walk the lot. It's the same work we do closer in, in Greenacres and Wellington, but the distances and the ground make the planning different.

  • Rain sets much of the calendar, since records from a station east of here in West Palm Beach show June and August as the wettest months and February as the driest, so we plan footings and pours around the summer storms.
  • Before we dig a footing, we ask where your septic tank, well line and irrigation run, because on a rural lot they're often right where a wall or drive wants to go.
  • If you keep horses or other animals, we plan the work area and the gates with you so they stay clear of fresh mortar and open trenches.
  • Long drives and soft grass by the road mean we pick the delivery spot with you, so a loaded block truck doesn't rut your lawn or the swale out front.
  • The county reports more than 16,000 parcels getting a flood elevation a foot or more higher, so before an addition or major renovation, county staff can tell you whether it counts as a substantial improvement and help you plan around it.

Questions Acreage homeowners ask us

Do I need a permit for flood protection work on my house in The Acreage?

It may need one, because the county says flood protection measures in unincorporated areas can require a building permit. The county asks owners to call its Building Division at 561-233-5374 or email floodzone@pbc.gov before making any improvements, and staff there can also give advice or a site visit if you have a drainage problem. If your job needs a permit, we apply for it and set up the inspections.

Does my masonry contractor need county certification to work in The Acreage?

Yes, if the work falls in a trade the county regulates, because the county's rules say a person must be certified to contract in a regulated trade. A contractor with a state license also has to register it with the county before applying for permits in unincorporated areas, and some trades the county once certified now fall under state law and no longer need a county certificate. Ask any contractor which license covers your job, and I'm glad to go over ours at the estimate.

What building code applies to a house in The Acreage?

Most homes here fall under the Florida Building Code, Residential, because the county's current amendments put detached one- and two-family homes and townhouses up to three stories under it. The outbuildings that go with those homes, up to the same height, are covered too, and that's the code we build to and the inspector checks against.

Does a contractor working in Palm Beach County need a business tax receipt?

Yes, the county Tax Collector says anyone selling services in Palm Beach County needs a local business tax receipt, one-person and home-based businesses included. It's on top of any license the law requires, and it doesn't regulate a business or vouch for its work, so check the trade license as well.
