Brick repair in Wellington FL - sound joints and bricks that keep water out

Crumbling mortar or a cracked, flaking brick? We fix the joints and bricks that need it and leave the sound ones alone.

A curved stone retaining wall borders a backyard patio with a fire bowl, seating, dining table, and flower beds.

Does your cracked or crumbling brick need repair?

Brick repair in Wellington comes down to renewing the worn mortar between your bricks, which masons call repointing, and replacing bricks that are broken or badly flaked, so water stops getting into the wall through the damaged spots.

Most people call us after spotting a crack in a joint, mortar that crumbles when they rub it, or a brick face that's started to flake off. Older trade guidance puts mortar joints at more than 25 years, depending on how exposed the wall is and the mortar used, and bricks well past 100, so it's usually the mortar that wears out first while the brick around it is often fine. That's why I'd rather fix the joints and bricks that need it and leave the rest of your wall alone.

The price turns on how many joints and bricks need work, how high the wall goes, whether we can find brick that matches yours, and whether more damage turns up behind the face once we open it. The schedule mostly depends on the weather, how long matching brick takes to track down, and any permit the job calls for. The estimate I write after looking at your wall says what we'll do and why, so you'll know before anyone picks up a tool.

What happens after you call about your brick?

Before I picked up a trowel, I ran the schedule for a busy building company, then learned the trade alongside its crews, and I started this business in Wellington in 2020. You can call (561) 268-0510 or send us a message to get things started.

I come out and look at it myself

After you reach out, I come to your house, walk the wall with you and point at what I'm seeing in the joints and bricks. I'd rather explain something twice than have you guess about your own masonry.

Your estimate, with the reasons on it

I write it up so you can read it at your own pace, and it covers only the work your wall actually needs. Once you say yes, I set the schedule and keep you posted on what comes next.

Our crew does the work

We're licensed and insured, and the crew I work with is the one that does your repair. Satisfaction guaranteed on every job.

How we handle brick repair

We start by telling you straight whether a crack needs fixing now or can be planned for later, because I'd rather you spend money on what can't wait. When a brick is broken, we cut it out, set a new one and renew the joints around it, so the repair holds and water has no easy way in. National brick trade guidance says new mortar should be no stronger than the original, since a harder mix puts stress where brick meets mortar and can flake the brick face, and that kind of damage is hard to undo. Preservation guidance also warns that power saws almost always chip the edges of thin brick joints, so it's fair to ask anyone you hire, us included, how they match the mortar and what tools they use to take the old mortar out.

This page is about brick walls and veneer, the brick face on the outside of a house. If you're thinking about new driveway pavers or retaining wall construction, those are separate jobs with their own pages, and I'm glad to look at them on the same visit.

  • Cracked, crumbling or hollow mortar joints cut out and repointed
  • Broken or flaking bricks replaced with the closest match we can find
  • Joints renewed around every brick we replace
  • Brick veneer checked for loose or missing sections
  • Mortar and dust cleaned off the wall when we finish

How the repair goes at your house

Most brick repairs follow the same four steps, and I'll tell you before we start if your wall needs anything different.

  1. Check every joint and brick

We go along the wall looking for cracked, crumbling or hollow joints and bricks that are broken or flaking, so the plan covers the whole problem and not just the spot you noticed. Anything we find that isn't on your estimate, I show you before we touch it.

  2. Clear out the damage

Our crew removes the loose mortar and any broken bricks, working carefully around the edges of the good brick next to them. We go deep enough to reach sound mortar so the new joint has something solid to bond to.

  3. Set new brick and pack the joints

Replacement bricks go in first, then we pack fresh mortar into the joints in layers and shape them to match the ones around them. Packing in layers keeps hollow spots out of the joint, which is where water would otherwise sit.

  4. Clean up and walk the wall with you

We clean mortar off the brick faces before it hardens and clear the work area. Then I walk the wall with you so you can see what we did and know what to keep an eye on.

Brick repair questions from Wellington homeowners

Which mortar problems mean my brick needs repointing?

Mortar worn back more than 1/4 inch, mortar that crumbles, joints with gaps in them, hairline cracks in the mortar and cracks between the brick and the mortar all mean it's time to repoint, according to brick industry guidance. You can check your joints for these before you call, and if you send photos, I'll tell you what I'm seeing.

Do small mortar cracks in my brick need fixing right away?

Not always, because cavity and veneer walls, the kinds built with an air space behind the brick, can handle the extra moisture that gets in through minor cracks. If that's what your house has, the repair can often be planned instead of rushed.

Why does white salt keep coming back on my brick?

White powder that keeps coming back long after the house was built likely means water is getting into the wall and staying there. That white bloom, called efflorescence, is normal on new brick as it dries out, so it's the return that's worth a look, since the water has to be coming in somewhere.

Can storm winds damage brick veneer on a Wellington house?

Yes, older federal guidance notes that brick veneer is often blown off homes and businesses in high winds. Once a section fails, wind-driven rain can get behind it and damage the house, so after a big storm it's worth walking around and looking for loose or missing brick.

Permits and contractor checks in Wellington

Whether your brick repair needs a permit is a question for Wellington's Building division, which enforces Wellington's own codes and the Florida Building Code and handles building permits online. When a job calls for a permit, we apply for it and set up the inspections, and I'll go over it with you at the estimate.

Palm Beach County requires contractors working in the county to be certified and insured, and the county lets you confirm a contractor's standing, whether they're certified in the county or licensed by the State of Florida. It's worth doing for anyone you hire, us included. We're based in Wellington and work in many cities around it, including West Palm Beach, Royal Palm Beach, The Acreage and beyond, and most brick calls we get are about cracked joints and flaking brick on house walls and garden walls.
